COD verification for Shopify: confirm cash on delivery orders

COD verification for Shopify means confirming a cash on delivery order with the customer before you ship it. It filters out orders placed by mistake, with a wrong phone number or with no intention to pay, so you don't pay to ship a parcel that comes straight back.

This guide covers why COD orders fail, the ways to verify them, and how to automate verification with a one-time code (OTP).

Why COD orders fail

Cash on delivery lets people buy without paying upfront, which is why many shoppers prefer it, especially in markets where card payments are less common. The cost is that a COD order isn't a commitment. When the parcel arrives, the customer can refuse it, and the parcel goes back to you.

That return trip is called RTO (return to origin). You pay for shipping both ways, the stock is tied up for days or weeks, and the packaging is often unusable. Common causes:

• Bogus or prank orders with made-up names or numbers.
• Wrong or unreachable phone numbers, so the courier can't arrange delivery.
• Impulse orders the customer has changed their mind about by the time the parcel arrives.
• Duplicate orders placed by accident.

Verification doesn't fix all of these, but it catches the ones you can catch before shipping: a number that doesn't exist, or a customer who never meant to order.

Ways to verify a COD order

1. Call the customer

Someone on your team calls each COD customer to confirm. It works, and it is personal, but it takes time, it doesn't happen outside working hours, and the customer may not pick up a call from an unknown number.

2. Automated IVR call

An automated call asks the customer to press a key to confirm. It needs no staff time, but some customers ignore calls from unknown numbers.

3. One-time code (OTP) by SMS or WhatsApp

The customer receives a short code by SMS or WhatsApp and enters it to confirm the order. It is quick for the customer, it proves the phone number is real and belongs to them, and it runs at any hour without anyone on your team.

Many stores combine methods: OTP first, then a call if the code can't be delivered.

How to set up COD verification in Shopify

Shopify doesn't verify COD orders by itself. First, enable COD in Shopify as a manual payment method. Then add a verification step with an app.

4. Decide what should happen to orders that are never verified: review them yourself, or have the app cancel them automatically.
5. Place a COD order on your own store to see the verification step the way a customer will, then cancel it.

Tips for fewer failed COD orders

• Tell customers about verification in your COD payment instructions, so the code doesn't come as a surprise.
• Ship verified orders first. Hold unverified orders for a short time before cancelling, in case the customer was simply busy.
• Consider a COD fee. A small fee covers part of the cost of collecting cash and nudges customers who can pay online to do so. Say it clearly at checkout.
• Watch your numbers. Compare how many COD orders are delivered versus returned before and after you start verifying, so you know whether the cost of the messages pays for itself in your store.
